The very rare and valuable SdKfz 222 armored car was acquired
by the Foundation from a Las Vegas automobile collection
in August of 2000. The Las Vegas collector had purchased
it from a British collector who had acquired it from the
British Army after World War II. The British Army had captured
the vehicle from the German Army in North Africa in the
summer of 1943 and had returned it to England for technical
evaluation.
On arrival, the SdKfz 222 was operational, but it ran poorly.
It was missing many exterior and interior components, and
the paint and markings were incorrect. Greg Taylor was the
project leader for restoration to factory
new condition. Restoration of this piece
turned out to be one of the more difficult and time-consuming
projects undertaken by the Foundation owing to the manufacture
of many new parts. Restoration was completed in May of 2001.
The only items missing are the optics for to 20mm main gun
and the correct radio.
